Earn + Save

How we earn a little extra for our money system.

There are three levers you can pull with money: reduce your expenses, increase your income, or shift the timeline on your goal. This page is all about the first two. These are the real things our family does to earn and save a bit more, so more goes towards the holidays (and the future).

Blogging: South Australia Road Trips

What started as sharing our family road trips has grown into a website and a Facebook community of 26,000 members. It earns through affiliate links and partnerships, and gives us more reasons to explore our own backyard.

My tip: start with something you already love doing. You'll keep going long after the novelty wears off.

Colouring books on Amazon KDP

My newest experiment! Amazon KDP lets you self-publish books and Amazon prints them only when someone orders. No stock, no upfront costs. I've just released my very first colouring book 🎉

My tip: make it once, sell it again and again. That's the kind of income that isn't tied to your time.

Maximising cashback

Before I buy anything online, I check ShopBack and TopCashback first. You click through their site before checking out, and get a percentage of what you spend back as cash. Stack it with frequent flyer points and you're winning twice.

💰 I'm expecting $1,000+ cashback from hotel bookings alone for our upcoming Europe trip!
My tip: only use it for things you were already buying. Cashback on something you didn't need isn't a saving.

Selling on Facebook Marketplace

With twin boys, we're always outgrowing something. Instead of letting clothes, toys and gear pile up in the cupboard, I list them on Facebook Marketplace. That money goes straight into our holiday account.

My tip: good photos in natural light, a fair price, and list on a Sunday night when everyone's scrolling.

Paid surveys

Not going to make you rich, but surveys are an easy way to earn a little extra while you're watching TV or waiting at school pick-up. Some even pay in frequent flyer points.

My tip: cash out to your holiday account so you can actually see it adding up.

Extra income is great, but it works best when every dollar already has a job. Let's build a money system that makes the most of it.
